TACO BELL: To Eat or Not to Eat the Shell?

Taco Bell has a taco salad that comes in a fried (very attractive) flour tortilla shell. And everyone who orders it, I am sure, wonders whether or not to crunch the shell into bite-sized pieces and mix it into the salad, or toss it, quickly, into the nearest trash can. Well ponder no more. They must be deep frying those babies extra long - each has about 400 calories, with 67 percent from fat. That's a high price to pay for"cute."

KFC: Does Kentucky Really "Do Chicken Right?"

Only if you like grease! What does the Colonel "do" to a normally low-fat chicken breast? An Original Recipe chicken breast is 270 calories, 48 to 50 percent from fat. Extra Crispy, which is really extra fatty, is 354 calories, with 53 to 60 percent from fat. For comparison sake (or shock value), a regular unadulterated broiled chicken breast (without the skin) is 140 calories, 21 percent from fat.

McDONALD'S: Big Mac (Heart) Attack

Bite into a Big Mac and you bite into some big calories - and fat calories at that. One Big Mac has 570 calories, 55 percent from fat, along with 980 milligrams of sodium.

What is it about the Big Mac that makes it such a fat snack? Could it be the slices of processed cheese? Or the heaping tablespoons of thousand island-like dressing? (Of course they call it their "special sauce." Or maybe it's the two hamburger patties with only three slices of bun?

If you find the "stacked up" look attractive in the Big Mac, why don't you order two regular little hamburgers and place one on top of the other before eating?

MORE TIPS:
  • Instead of baking chocolate (1 oz.) use:
    • 3 tbs. of cocoa plus 1 tsp. oil
  • Instead of hot chocolate mixes, use hot cocoa mix made from the following recipe:
    • 1 cup nonfat dry milk powder
    • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 3 tbs. sugar
    • Mix ingredients and store in an airtight container. To use, put 2 heaping tsp. of mix into a cup and add hot water. Stir well.
  • Instead of Cheese, use:
    • Part skimmed mozzarella and other reduced fat (lower calorie) cheeses. In most cases, you can also use less cheese than the recipe calls for.
